TwinStar Credit Union agreed to a $1.75 million class action settlement following allegations it unfairly charged overdraft and nonsufficient funds (NSF) fees. According to the lawsuit, the credit union assessed multiple fees on the same transaction or charged overdraft fees even when members had sufficient funds at the time of purchase.
The plaintiffs argued that TwinStar's practices contradicted the expectations of its members. For example, members were charged overdraft fees for one-time debit card purchases that were approved when their account had enough money—but were later hit with a fee when the transaction settled and the balance was negative. Others were reportedly charged multiple NSF fees for reprocessed transactions without clear disclosure or consent.
TwinStar, which operates in Washington and Oregon, denied wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to resolve the claims.
Eligible members will automatically receive a share of the $1.75 million settlement fund. The exact amount will depend on how many people qualify. There is no need to file a claim—payouts will be distributed directly to those who meet the eligibility criteria and do not opt out of the settlement.
